OPPO Licenses Cellular Standard-Essential Patents to Volkswagen Group for Connected Vehicles

OPPO, a leading smart device brand, has signed a global patent licensing agreement with Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft (Volkswagen), granting access to OPPO’s portfolio of cellular standard-essential patents (SEPs), including 5G technologies. The agreement allows Volkswagen to utilize these technologies to enhance connectivity features across its global vehicle lineup.

“We’re pleased to partner with Volkswagen through this licensing agreement,” said Vincent Lin, Head of Patent Licensing at OPPO. “We value the Volkswagen IP team's forward-thinking approach and commitment to innovation. This collaboration not only highlights OPPO’s strength in cellular technology but also reinforces our dedication to a sustainable and innovation-driven intellectual property ecosystem.”

Robin Cefai, Chief IP Licensing Officer at Volkswagen, commented, “Our partnership with OPPO exemplifies an efficient, respectful, and business-oriented approach to licensing standard-essential patents. It reflects Volkswagen’s ongoing commitment to recognizing the value of intellectual property and working toward equitable solutions.”

This agreement marks OPPO’s first bilateral patent license with a connected vehicle manufacturer, signaling the growing adoption of OPPO’s cellular SEPs beyond smartphones and into the automotive industry. OPPO’s 5G SEPs are now deployed in over 40 countries and regions, and as of January 2025, the company ranked eighth globally in overall 5G patent strength according to LexisNexis® IPlytics.

By March 2025, OPPO had filed over 113,000 patent applications and secured more than 62,000 granted patents worldwide. The company remains committed to advancing core technologies in 5G/6G, AI, fast charging, imaging, and video—cementing its position as a global innovator and leader in high-value intellectual property.
